Endosteal (endosseous) implants: The most common and popular type, these are surgically implanted directly into your jawbone. This type of implant includes three varieties: screwed (threaded), cylinder (smooth), and bladed. Once the surrounding gum tissue has healed, a second surgery is performed to connect a post or abutment to the original implant. The last step is attaching an artificial tooth (or teeth) to the post — individually, grouped as a bridge, or as a supported denture.
Subperiosteal implants: Consisting of a metal frame fitted onto the jawbone just below the gum tissue, this type of dental implant was originally used primarily to hold dentures in place when bone height was insufficient. With subperiosteal implants, the post protrudes through your gums to securely hold the prosthesis. As your gums heal, the frame becomes fixed to your jawbone and once healing is complete, artificial teeth are mounted to the posts.
