What Causes Dental Implant Failure?

Dental implants have an incredible reputation for their durability, longevity, permanent nature, and high success rates. However, did you know that this optimal choice for restorative treatment can fail from time to time? Implant rejection, although rare, is not entirely uncommon and can occur for various reasons. Our Coventry, RI dentist addresses this possibility and explains why implant failure may ensue.

Early and Late Implant Rejection

While implants are permanent prosthetic teeth that aren’t susceptible to decay and don’t require any special maintenance, they are most vulnerable during two stages in the implant process. Known as early and late implant rejection, implants can fail either during the process of osseointegration or immediately following the procedure.
Occurs if an underlying dental issue is left untreated before the implants are placed or if the patient has an allergic reaction to the implant material used in the mouth. Once the gums reject the implant, the process of osseointegration comes to a halt and results in a failed implant. Without proper osseointegration, which is the process of fusing the implant to the jawbone, the dental implant won’t have the security and stability found in natural teeth.
Occurs once the implant has been successfully placed and has gone through the process of osseointegration. While an early rejection may occur for one or two reasons, a late implant rejection can occur for a number of reasons such as misaligned implants, post-op trauma, poor oral hygiene, and excess smoking.

Peri-Implantitis

Despite having a permanent nature, dental implants can succumb to infections and bacteria. In order to ensure the success of your implants, it’s essential to care for them properly. When a patient fails to maintain good dental hygiene habits, an infection known as peri-implantitis may develop in the gums and endanger the restorations.

Peri-implantitis is a bacterial gum infection that develops around the existing dental implant, endangering the security and stability needed for a successful restoration. Although this infection is treatable, if neglected it can result in serious repercussions such as bone loss and implant failure. Once peri-implantitis exists in the mouth and has progressed, it can endanger neighboring, healthy teeth and result in the need for implant replacement.
